Henry VIII and the Narcissism Built into the Throne

When you are the Supreme Head of the Church and the State, there is no outside. No institution to appeal to. No independent voice that can contradict the self-narrative without being destroyed. Henry VIII built a kingdom where every perspective that could challenge his architecture was eliminated — legally, theologically, or physically. This was not tyranny in the conventional sense. It was the supply-dependent self institutionalized to national scale.

The Six Wives: A Supply Chain, Not a Love Story

The wives were interchange in the supply system. Each performed a specific function, and each was discarded when that function failed.

Catherine of Aragon provided status supply — a Spanish princess, the legitimacy of a continental alliance. Her failure to produce a male heir was a supply failure. Jane Seymour died in childbirth after providing the male heir. She was retrospectively idealized — the only wife Henry chose to be buried beside. This was structural gratitude, not love. Jane Seymour was the perfect supply source: she delivered the required output and then exited without demanding anything in return. The architecture rewarded her by preserving her in the optimal position — the wife who performed and disappeared.

The pattern continued: Anne of Cleves rejected within hours (the supply did not match expectations), Catherine Howard executed (the supply was revealed to have an independent history that threatened the self-narrative), Catherine Parr survived (she learned to manage the architecture rather than oppose it).

More refused to confirm the king’s self-definition. The projection was devastating: “You are the one threatening the realm” — when More’s only threat was his refusal to lie.

Devaluation: Thomas Cromwell — the architect of the English Reformation, Henry’s most effective administrator — was executed when he failed as a supply node. His service was irrelevant. His function was all that mattered. The devaluation was absolute: the person who had rebuilt England’s institutional architecture was destroyed because he had become a non-performing supply source.
